Appendix A — Drone Terminology Glossary
Published
Understanding drone terminology makes learning the hobby much easier. This glossary covers many of the most common terms hobbyists encounter.
Acro Mode
A fully manual FPV flight mode with no self-leveling assistance. Also called Manual Mode.
Altitude Hold
A flight feature that helps a drone maintain consistent height automatically.
Antenna
A component used to transmit or receive radio or video signals.
Autonomous Flight
Flight controlled partially or completely by onboard systems rather than continuous manual input.
Battery Cell (S Rating)
Drone batteries are commonly labeled:
- 2S
- 4S
- 6S
The number refers to how many lithium cells are connected in series.
Brushless Motor
A highly efficient electric motor commonly used in modern drones.
Cinematic Flight
Smooth, controlled flying designed to create professional-looking video footage.
ESC (Electronic Speed Controller)
An electronic component that controls motor speed.
FAA
The Federal Aviation Administration, which regulates civil aviation in the United States.
FPV (First-Person View)
Flying a drone using live video transmitted from the aircraft to goggles or a screen.
Geofencing
Software restrictions that prevent drones from entering certain airspace areas.
GPS
Global Positioning System technology used for navigation and stabilization.
Gimbal
A stabilized camera mount that keeps footage smooth during flight.
LiPo Battery
Lithium Polymer battery commonly used in drones because of high energy output and lightweight construction.
Line of Sight (LOS)
Maintaining direct visual contact with the drone during flight.
ND Filter
Neutral Density filter used to reduce light entering the camera for cinematic video settings.
Orbit Shot
A cinematic maneuver where the drone circles around a subject.
Part 107
FAA regulations governing most commercial drone operations in the United States.
Propeller Pitch
The angle of a propeller blade affecting thrust and speed characteristics.
Remote ID
A system that broadcasts identifying and location information from drones during flight.
Return-to-Home (RTH)
An automated safety feature that guides the drone back to its takeoff point.
Telemetry
Live flight data transmitted from the drone to the pilot.
Visual Observer
A second person assisting the pilot by maintaining visual awareness of the drone and surroundings.
